On our last full day in Cairns, Chris and I decided to go on a trip to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree area. We got picked up by Trek North safaris (http://www.treknorth.com.au/) way too early in the morning and headed up to Port Douglas for a morning coffee. We did not have a lot of time there but it looked like a lovely small town to go for a holiday - really nice beach and some interesting looking shops and restaurants.
We then continued on our journey and went to the Mossman Gorge. The stream looked like it had big pebbles in it and we had an fascinating tour of the rainforest. It was really pretty there and it looked like there was lots of interesting walks etc to go on if you had more time there.
From Mossman Gorge, we headed off to the Daintree River where we went on a trip on the river hunting for saltwater crocs. Disappointingly, we did not really see any big crocs :-( but saw a couple of tree snakes and had a good look at the mangrove trees which inhabit this area.
We then headed off to the Alexandra Range lookout where we had a look out at the coast and spotted a number of towns, hills and other points of interest from there.
After a busy morning it was time for a BBQ lunch and we went to the Daintree Entomological museum whilst our driver prepared it. This museum contains Australia's largest collection of insects which we had a good look round. There was also a butterfly enclosure which we went in to.
The spot where we had lunch was pretty near perfect and we had the opportunity to cool off a bit. There was lots of fish and eels as well in the water which we could feed.
After a relaxing lunch we headed off to Cape Tribulation. As we were walking to the beach we heard quite a lot of commotion coming from a nearby picnic table.... As we went over we saw a large monitor lizard harrassing some people who were trying to have a quiet lunch. The lizard jumped on the picnic table along with the people having lunch and at that point our guide intervened and picked up the disgruntled lizard by his tail before one of them got bitten... The lizard was not impressed about this!!!
We then headed round to some viewing points and got awesome views of Cape Tribulation rainforests before heading down to the beach.
We then headed down to the beach and had a look at it. VVV long golden sands surrounded by rainforest and close to the reef - very special place!!!
On the way back to the bus, we saw some more wildlife - some green tree ants and a big spider! Plus we saw some of the signs which remind us just how dangerous some of the Australian wildlife can be..... Always worth remembering...
On the way back to Cairns we made a couple more stops. One at the Valley of the Palms which was an awesome place!!!! Really quite different to anywhere I had ever been before.
We also stopped at a small cafe where there is a green tree frog living on a light - we did see it move so we knew it was not plastic! We also saw some of the sugar cane fields which used to be the main money earner in Cairns before tourism arrived.
We got back to Cairns really late but went out and had the most amazing steak and beers to finish off a great week in Cairns.
