fter a very early pick up, we met Geoff, our driver and guide, for the next 5 days. We were doing a Wilderness 4wheel drive tour (http://www.wildernessadventures.com.au/) of Kakadu, Litchfield and Katherine Gorge. We intially got a lot of lectures from Geoff about drinking water (it was generally about 37 C out there and we were going to be doing lots of walking), not jumping off rocks into water (someone had been hurt doing this on a tour) and that we were not going to die from all the evil poisonous things in Oz (well I would hope not seeing as we had been living out here for 6 months!). Our transport was a big 4 wheel drive bus.
Our first stop of the morning was at the Corroborree Billabong where we went on a boat cruise. We saw quite a few crocodiles, wallabies and heaps and heaps of different birds along with lots of flowering water lillies. Again, we got more lectures on croc awareness and drinking water from that guide too - they were very concerned that we did not get dehydrated....). Spot the wallaby and the croc in the last photo!
We then arrived in Kakadu National Park - a World Heritage Area (with the Great Barrier Reef and Cape Trib we seem to have been to quite a few of these lately!)
After this, we went to Ubirr rock. This is a very special area with a lot of Aboriginal rock art present. There are many different styles of art and this reflects the age of the paintings. Many of the pictures are of animals and fish and were painted when the ancestors successfully hunted. They were also used to tell stories to the children and illustrate good behaviours.

We then climbed Ubirr rock which gave us fantastic 360 degree views of the flood plains and the Arnhem Land escarpment - truely awesome that the photos just cannot imitate! This walk was not too hard the heat made it trickier - Geoff was definately right when he said we had to drink a lot of water.... However, the great views were a great reward!!!!!
