Hertford to Melbourne

Hmm what's been going on lately...

Just realised it has been ages since I last wrote a post...  We have been pretty busy lately with work, socialising and stuff lately...  Plus we found out in April that we are going to be having a baby at Christmas so have been spending a lot of time sorting life out for that!  In addition, we have been applying for our permanent residency in Oz which takes forever (or that's the way it feels at the moment) and we have agreed to sell our house in the UK to our tenants so lots of time been spent on that too!

So what have we been up to since we last posted?  Well, we were back in the UK for 2 weeks at the end of April and beginning of May. We had said when we came to Oz that we would not go back to the UK for the first two years as that is all the time we initially intended to spend out here.  But my brother asked us to be Godparents to his daughter so we decided to head back to the UK for it.  Luckily, Chris managed to tie it in with some work and we both managed a couple of one day conferences so it was good to catch up with old colleagues.  The day of the flight over was a bit stressful as we had just found out i was pregnant!  We were very excited but the idea of getting on a 24 h plane journey was not my idea of fun! This led to some interesting questions in the UK as I was not drinking...  Some people guessed but we just ignored the question or claimed jetlag as the excuse...  Other people we did confirm it too...    Still we made it and although my jet lag was horredous we had a good couple of weeks.  We saw lots of friends and family and had a good time.  It was nice to meet David's girlfriend and family properly as well.

So far, the pregnancy is going well touch wood with no morning sickness or any adverse effects...  Fingers crossed it keeps like that and we have as easy a time through the next part as we have had for the first half!

We also saw Mik and Marian plus Kathryn and Kat who flew down from Scotland to see us :-)  It was lovely to see them all and catch up!

Then before we knew it, we were on a flight back to Melbourne.  Again the jetlag this way was horrendous not helped by the fact that I was sick for 2 days when I got back.  It took about a month to sort my head out with the jetlag and actually be able to sleep through the night and not be up at 3-4am every day!

So that trip took up just under half of our holiday for the year (downside of Oz = 20 days holiday a year!) so we have not been anywhere else for a  holiday lately.  But we have been out and about for quite a few of the weekends.

We went to Werribee Open Range Zoo one weekend.  This is like a giant safari park and quite good fun.

We have also been up to Healesville Animal Sanctuary which has lots of Australian animals.

We went to Ballarat for a weekend as well.  Ballarat was established as a gold mining town and one of the major tourist attractions there now is a reconstructed gold mine and town, Sovereign Hill.  It was great there although it was a bit cold!  It was really interesting to wander around and see the old mines, the Chinese influence and there was lots of people wandering round in period costume to make the history come to life.

On the drive home, we came back through Daylesford which is a spa town nr Melbourne.  it looked lovely and we stopped there for lunch.  It would be a great place to go for the weekend and not too far away either.  We went to Sailors Falls as well - one of the better waterfalls we have seen in Oz but still not huge!

We went to Phillip Island in July for a day trip too.  This is where lots of the Little Penguins live and you can see them come in at sundown.  Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take pictures of them as it hurts there eyes.  One of our friends, Diane, had told us about a boat trip you could do from Cowes to Seal Rock and she had seen whales off the boat a couple of weeks ago so we decided to go on it and keep our fingers crossed that we would also see a whale.  On the way out to Seal Rock we saw very little in the way of wildlife...  Once we got to the Rock there was heaps and heaps of seals - apparently about 7000 of them live there....  They are quite inquistive and like checking out the boat.

On the way back to the jetty, the captain thought he saw a whale in the distance.  He was right and we found a smallish Southern Right whale which was doing a fantastic show with lots of jumping and flicking of his tail.

Think that's about it for the last few months...

Day five in Tasmania - Wed 17th Feb

The plan for today was to drive down to the Freycinet Peninsula going via Bay of Fires.  This was going to be another reasonably long day in the car but a lot of the route was down the coast and very pretty so we did not mind....  The drive from Launceston to the Bay of Fires was pretty uneventful without much to take pictures of but the Bay of Fires was stunning - really blue water and white sand and empty beaches - beautiful!!!!

We then continued our drive down to Freycinet and arrived late afternoon at the Lodge (http://www.freycinetlodge.com.au/) where we were going to be staying for the next 3 nights.  The Lodge was nice but was overpriced because of it's location.  The same was true of the restaurants within it.  We booked some of our activities for the next couple of days there - we were going to go kayaking on the Bay, do a food and wine tasting and go on a boat trip to see Wineglass Bay from the water as well as some walking.

Day four in Tasmania - Tues 16th Feb

Today we said goodbye to Cradle Mountain and headed up to Launceston for the night.  Not a lot interesting from the drive - just lots of little windy roads and big logging lorries coming in the opposite direction making it not the easiest drive ever!

We arrived in Launceston around lunchtime and decided to head off to the Boag's brewery for a tour -http://www.boags.com.au/.  We were lucky enough to arrive just in time for a beer and cheese tasting and tour - beer and cheese together - what could possibly go wrong and all the essential food groups together in one meal ;-).  The tour was really interesting and the tasting fantastic!

Then after that we went on a walk around the Catarct Gorge Reserve which is a wee walk outside the centre of Launceston.  This was a circular walk but one half of it was a lot more difficult than the other!!!!!  There was also a chair lift but Chris would not let me get it!!!!  It is a lovely walk though and really pretty.

Day three in Tasmania - Mon 15th Feb

What a difference a day makes!!!

The day after we attempted and failed to summit Cradle Mountain in the rain we woke up to brilliant sunshine!  It was sooooo different to the Sunday and so we got some good pictures around the Lodge that morning...

We had decided to walk up to the ranger run visitor centre just within the Cradle Mountain National Park and from there walk up the board walk which would take us to Lake Dove and close to the Boatshed we had seen the day before where would hopefully get some pictures of Cradle Mountain that were not shrouded in cloud.  The board walk is quite an easy 7km walk which passes lakes and gives excellent views of the surrounding countryside.  The only thing that we were slightly disappointed by was the lack of wildlife we saw.

Once we got up to the beach where you can see the Mountain and the Boatshed from we were not disappointed and got the perfect views which we had been hoping for the day before....

We then got the bus back to the Lodge and from there decided to go to a Tasmanian Devil conservation park which  was next door to the lodge http://www.devilsatcradle.com/.  The Tassie Devil is currently under threat from a cancerous disease called Devils Facial Tumour Disease which affects 30-50% of devils in the wild.  It was first identified in 1996 and causes the devils to die...  There are a number of breeding programs being set up to try and safeguard the species and the folks at Devils at Cradle hope the join one.  We got an amazing tour of the park, patted a devil and learnt a lot about this fascinating marsupial.  These guys do a great job and I would definately recommend a visit if you are in Cradle Mountain.
